Temptation of a Virgin by the Marchioness of Dorchester (circa 1625) with live reading

Temptation of a Virgin by the Marchioness of Dorchester (circa 1625)

In mine garden there,

fragrant blooms

perfumed the air.

Rays warmed mine skin,

so pale and fair

An innocence that day

indeed I wore

When on the grass I lay

And the serpent

whispered

‘take the day

Partake as Eve

of sins so sweet,

fruits so divine,

your fate to meet’

That serpent coiled

there ‘neath the tree

said ‘Come m’lady

come to me

Taste the apple

ripe and red.’

Temptation danced

inside mine head

‘Put aside your guardians’

speech

ignore the sermons

churchmen preach’

With turmoil’s passion,

Yes,

I reached.

And I bit hard

of life’s rich feast,

to taste it’s core,

when I was changed

forevermore
